Echo Carburettors: Fitment and When You Actually Need One

The carburettor is the part people order when a two-stroke will not run properly, and it is the part that is least often at fault. It is also the one where a cheap replacement is most likely to arrive needing work.

This page covers what fits what, and - more usefully - how to tell whether you need one at all.

These groupings come from how aftermarket suppliers list fitment, which follows the engine rather than the badge. If your machine is not on a listing, the deciding factor is the engine, not the model name.

Four things to rule out first

A carburettor that is genuinely faulty is uncommon. A carburettor that cannot work because of something upstream is very common. In order:

  1. Stale fuel. Pump petrol with ethanol goes off in weeks, not months, and leaves a varnish that blocks the tiny passages inside. This is the single biggest cause of two-stroke non-starts after winter.
  2. Fuel lines and primer bulb. They perish. Hard, cracked lines suck air instead of fuel, and a split bulb cannot prime. Both are a few dollars and both are usually sold together in a tune-up kit.
  3. Fuel filter in the tank. The weight on the end of the pickup line clogs and starves the engine under load - runs at idle, dies on the throttle.
  4. Air filter. A blocked filter mimics a rich carburettor exactly. See air filters and tune-up parts.

If all four are good and it still will not hold a tune, then the carburettor is a fair suspect.

Cleaning versus replacing

A carburettor gummed up by old fuel usually recovers. The job is removing it, splitting it, soaking the body in carburettor cleaner, blowing the passages through with compressed air and fitting a new gasket and diaphragm set. Diaphragms harden with age and are the part that most often does not recover, which is why a rebuild kit costs a fraction of a carburettor and fixes a good share of cases.

Replacement makes sense when the body is corroded, the adjustment screws are stripped, or the machine is worth less than the hours you would spend on it. Aftermarket units for these engines are cheap - which is the trade: most run, but expect to set the mixture screws yourself, and expect more variation between units than a genuine part.

After fitting one

A new carburettor is not a fit-and-forget part on a two-stroke. It will need the idle and mixture screws set, and it needs clean fuel through it or it will gum up exactly like the last one. If the machine sits over winter, either drain the fuel system or run it dry.

The cheapest insurance is fresh mix at the right ratio - Echo sells its Power Blend at 50:1, part 6450050 for the gallon bottle. See tune-up parts and oil.

Frequently Asked Questions

What carburettor fits an Echo SRM-225?

Carburettors for this engine are listed as fitting SRM-225 together with GT-225, PAS-225, PE-225 and SHC-225 - they share the same 21.2 cc engine. Fitment follows the engine family, not the model badge.

Should I clean or replace an Echo carburettor?

Clean first in most cases. Gumming from stale fuel is the usual cause and it responds to a strip, soak and a new diaphragm set, which costs far less than a carburettor. Replace when the body is corroded, the adjuster screws are stripped, or the time is worth more than the part.

Why does my Echo run then die when I open the throttle?

Classic fuel starvation - most often a clogged tank filter or a perished fuel line drawing air, not the carburettor itself. It idles because idle demand is low, and dies when the engine asks for more fuel than the blockage allows.

Are cheap aftermarket carburettors worth it?

For a machine that gets light use, usually yes - they are a fraction of the genuine price and most run. Expect to set the mixture screws yourself and expect more unit-to-unit variation. For a machine that earns money, the genuine part is the safer buy.
