.095 vs .105: which to actually run
The recurring question is whether to step up from .095 to .105 in, and the answer is usually no. On a 21.2 cc trimmer the .095 in factory size is what the eyelets and clutch were sized for. Heavier .105 in line carries more mass and cutting corners, so it powers through woody stems faster - but three things push back:
- The engine bogs. Thicker line has more drag through grass. A small-displacement machine spends its life on the edge of stalling at full line length.
- The head wears faster. A bigger cord chews at an eyelet sized for something thinner, and square .105 in line wears it faster still.
- It may not feed at all. A head rated for .095 in can bind on .105 in even though the cord physically fits.
Step up to .105 in only on a 25.4 cc machine, or when you are constantly in heavy brush and accept the shorter head life.
